Check ‘Em Out

I don’t have any new cool art pieces to show off (though some cool full color comic pages on their way). So instead I’d like to shamelessly promote some cool new comics that came out recently.

INDEPENDENT:

The leap of EPICNESS

ATOMIC ROBO: The new Atomic Robo series (6): Ghost of Station X has just released issue #3. I’m waiting for the Trade Paperback, but based on Vol 3, 4, and 5, this series is going to be absolutely great! Brian Clevinger and Scott Wegener combine their talents in a way I’ve never seen before, they work perfectly together.

The team get all gussied up and THEN kick some skulls.

SKULLKICKERS: Again, I haven’t had a chance to get my hands on this one (since my comic shop doesn’t stock it), but I’ve been looking forward to it ever since I read the first volume. It is going to be great, seriously go check it out. The writing is superb.

MAINSTREAM:

Characters? Eh. Art? EPIC.

REDHOOD & THE OUTLAWS: This series got a lot of flack in the first issue because of the terrible portrayal of Starfire (the girl shooting lasers). However once you get past that, this series really takes off. I got it simply because I thought there was a lot I could learn from the art (which there is), but now I’m addicted because it’s actually a pretty cool series. It’s basically three ex-super heroes that are trying to figure what to do with their lives. They’re all redeeming themselves.

What's black and white and red all over?

(new) ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN: I just had to give this comic a shot. And it paid off so well. The art and writing blend so perfectly. The art especially, is so subtle and grand, I’ve never seen anything like it before (especially in a monthly comic). It basically follows the new Spider-Man following the death of the original Spider-Man (and this isn’t a comic death where they come back, he is dead and gone). But the story is incredible, how they focus on his death affects the whole world and his legacy. It is really heart-wrenching.

Fair fight? Yeah I guess. The villains might be out numbered though...

BATMAN: Okay, besides the movies, I’m not the biggest Batman fan. But those working on this comic got it so right! The art is just a tad bit cartoony and fits so well. Not to mention there’s a secret society. Everyone loves secret societies.

Spidey's such a popular guy.

AVENGING SPIDER-MAN: I just got the first issue of this series, and it’s so worth it. It is basically Spider-Man teaming up with different super-heroes, going on adventures. It’s the most casual and fun comic book I’ve seen in so long, which I feel is lacking from so many comics now-a-days. Not to mention the artist is amazing.

Enjoy.

Peace out.

It happens…

ATOMIC ROBO

Fear the VAMPIRE DIMENSION, for they are not SHINY!

Here’s a quick Atomic Robo sketch I drew. It’s been sitting on my desk for awhile, because homework has been getting in the way, but I finally got it done. I was going to make it a cleaner job, but after I quickly laid out the lights and darks, I liked it better that way and left it how it was. For anyone who reads ATOMIC ROBO, (specifically vol. 4 or 5) you’ll get this joke… if not, READ ATOMIC ROBO! It’s AWESOME! The first two volumes were kind of ‘eh’ to me, but vol 3, 4, 5 are some of the greatest things I have ever read. EVER.

I’m thinking about doing another cool color one, next are the Baldy and Shorty from SKULLKICKERS.

But now for the ‘It happens’ part. It looks like I won’t be doing Dudes in Grey. I’m really unhappy about that, but it’s for a good reason. There will still be comic pages, but they’ll be for a project called Wingslinger. I’m doing an independent project with an english teacher at my school for credit. I’m making a feature length graphic novel, so we’ll see how it goes. But since I want as much experience as I can, I might do another comic on the side. However this comic would be really low key and simple, I’m thinking only pencils, but we’ll see.

All for now,

Carson

Upcoming Schedule

I was hoping to have a cool art piece done for today, but it didn’t happen. I’ve been really swamped with scholarship money searches and such.

So anyways I figured I update you all on the comic situation. My upcoming web comic Dudes in Grey is aiming to come out in the next few months. I have the plot for the first issue finalized and once some of my college stuff clears up I’ll jump right on that. However in the meantime, I have uploaded all of the rest of The Azure pages to the blog. That’s a total of 18 pages, which will update every thursday. In the next few pages you will see that I have stopped shading the panels… that’s why I said it was unfinished. I’m done with that project, so I’m simply showing you how it is. That being said, I think I did some really cool stuff with that series and I really liked how it turned out. So with that alone I will have comic pages until March 1st 2012. Adding on the other comic I have (12 pages) I’ll be set for awhile, and at some point I’ll be setting the updating rate to two pages a week, but we’ll see how everything goes.

So enjoy some of these sketches of The Azure I have.

Some of the characters... doing things. Many aren't in the first chapter and the ones who are, change a lot.

I’ll keep this short, because we all have to go out and get candy tonight. But Happy Halloween everyone!

Here’s my Two-Face pumpkin! (The left side is actually dented which is why it looks a little lopsided).

Grrrr my teeth are glowing.

I’m a Bee… Buzz, Buzz…

First off, hello.

Here’s another weekly blog update by moi. I’m working on some other comic work so that I’ll have a weekly comic every week for the next few months. So far I have the four Actioneer pages, five Boom Boy pages, the rest of the (unfinished) Azure Chpt. 1, and twelve pages of Four Walls (which I’m working on now). Wow that’s almost a whole years worth of content… I will probably be switching to multiple updates a week soon. Stay tuned.

But with all of this comic work I have reignited a desire to improve my drawing skills fast than they naturally would. So I have started drawing sketches and final pieces just for fun (well, more of them than I normally do). And in a joint effort to show my appreciation for all of my favorite Comic Book/Graphic Novel/Web Comic artists and writers, and at the same time, trying to get more traffic to my site (even though there’s not that much here yet), I am going to be doing a lot of pieces of other characters. I’ve already done two and they were a blast to draw. Really great stuff.

Here’s my tribute to Justin Cristelli and JC Grande’s RED KNIGHT. He was an absolute blast to draw, and it was great practice for coloring (which is still incredibly frustrating…)

This is a variant of the Red Knight movie poster coming out in 2022.

So yeah.

But now the even cooler news.

I’M GOING TO SCAD! Last friday I got accepted to the Savannah College of Art and Design! I was there over the summer and it was the greatest school I’ve ever been to, it was fantastic. I’m planning on studying Sequential Art there (Comic Book art) in hopes of a future career. So now my artwork has a bit more credit than before… I’ll probably be updating this a lot more, but for now, I’d just like to say how excited I am.

Carson out.
